80 arrests, one police officer hurt during Mifflin Street Block Party

MADISON (WKOW) -- More than 80 people were arrested and one Madison police officer was injured during this year's Mifflin Street Block Party.

According to the City of Madison, six of those 80 people arrested were booked into the Dane County Jail. Officials say the arrests were mainly for minor alcohol related offenses.

The officer hurt was working a traffic post and is suffering minor injuries after she was hit by a vehicle. Officials say, she was walking around and alert when she was taken to the hospital. The driver involved remained at the scene and was not cited.

One car was also flipped over and another was severely damaged.

Police officers and Madison firefighters also responded to a partially broken front porch around 2:35 p.m. Officials do not know how many people were on the porch. No one was hurt, but the property was cordoned off for safety purposes.

Mifflin Street EMS teams were dispatched to 14 medical emergencies on Mifflin, with 11 of those calls resulting in hospital transport. The EMS calls were predominantly for alcohol-related illnesses and injuries.

First responders also responded to a downed power line, which was ultimately determined to be a low-voltage communications wire.

Officials say it was the largest year for the annual block party since the pandemic. Both the 400 and 500 blocks of Mifflin Street were shut down due to the crowds.

A press release from the City says more than 150 officers worked the event, including the department's Special Events Team.

Many attendees left around 5:40 p.m. when rain moved into the area. Roads reopened around 5:45 p.m.
