Police tear down tents, protestors arrested at Library Mall

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Tensions grew between police and pro-Palestine protestors Wednesday morning as officers tore down tents and arrested some protestors on UW-Madison's campus.

Madison officers arrived at Library Mall and began removing the tents and standing guard as students gathered to protest.

As one of the tents was torn down, you could hear students shrieking.

Posts online appeared to show multiple students and a professor being arrested at one point.

Chants from protestors continued as some were taken away in handcuffs.

The protest grew in intensity between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The area seemed to be more calm after 9 a.m.

"We hope that protestors will elect to avail themselves of the many alternative ways to protest and express their views wihout tents or encampments on our campus grounds," Chancellor Jennier Mnookin said in a statement.

Since Monday, the university has asked protestors to take the tents down. Protestors refused.

"Then they told our negotiators to tell us to take the tents down, and said that the tents were nothing but a symbolic way to spite them. Our negotiators responded by saying that this is extremely hurtful to say, and that these tents actually represent the 1.9 million Gazans and Palestine that Israel has displaced from their homes," said Jules.

Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin has reportedly expressed interest in speaking with demonstrators.
