Parents reunited with students after active shooter threat in Mount Horeb

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. (WKOW) -- Parents of students in the Mount Horeb School District had to wait for hours to be reunited with their kids after an active shooter threat outside the middle school Wednesday morning.

Reunification of Intermediate students will begin at the District Bus Garage. Kindergarten, first, and second-grade students are being released starting at 5 p.m. Parents with children in Wrap Care at Little Vikings, Hearts and Hands, or CCS can report there.

Some of those parents told 27 News that after a long, emotionally-draining day, all they wanted was to bring their kids home.

The district notified parents that schools were going on lockdown around 11:15 a.m. The district started releasing students around 5 p.m. after investigators deemed there was no other active threat.

"I didn't even believe it at first. It was really unbelievable," Alana Dorsey said. Dorsey's daughter, Rylan, is in third grade. Dorsey said Rylan just sat down at the lunch table when her teacher started evacuating students from the school.

Mom of four Heather Wimmer said the first part of her afternoon was spent scrambling, not knowing where to go to find her kids.

Both moms said the most important thing was knowing their kids were okay.
